Open education can take several forms. Paul Stacey (2018) imagined open education as a growing tree from which major established and growing components of the open landscape hang, including:

• Open Source Software and Open Source Hardware;
• Open Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums;
• Open Science;
• Open Access;
• Open Data;
• Open Government;
• Open Policy, and finally;
• Open Educational Resources.
